The apprentice program at Greenbriar Farm was designed for the benefit of the farm and for the individual who is interested in learning our methods of stable management and of starting young horses under saddle. At the beginning of the program we used the term "working student." Because this phrase implies a "riding lessons in exchange for chores" situation we stopped using it. The apprentice program is organized differently than this. Our apprentices tell us what aspect of horse care, training, and riding that they are interested in learning and we then work out a program geared toward this. Cleaning stalls is not part of the experience. An apprentice may want to concentrate on starting young horses under saddle or he or she may want to learn pasture and facility management. An apprentice can live on the farm and work here every day or he/she may live in the area and come to the farm only on certain days of the week. Whatever arrangements are made, the emphasis is on helping the apprentice achieve his or her goals. | ||

Maggie "I came to Greenbriar Farm to learn to handle and train horses safely. Having begun with the youngest horses, I am currently introducing three year olds to the surcingle and saddle and look forward to woodland trail walks with the gentle, eager, and intelligent anglo-arabian horses. My goal here is to end up with a thoughtful, experienced, and safe horse."Jenny "When I began apprenticing at Greenbriar Farm I wanted to get more experience working with and training young horses, and learn about the sport of endurance riding. I have had the amazing opportunity to condition a young mare, train a yearling colt to be handled and trailered, and I am now focusing on starting the three year olds under saddle. My apprenticing experience at Greenbriar Farm, and the amount that I have learned, has been priceless." |
